Sharmila Dhankar Bags India’s First Para Athletics Gold at Commonwealth Games 2026 (X)
Glasgow: India's Sharmila Dhankar won the gold medal in the women's para shot put F57 event at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. The 40-year-old achieved the feat with a season-best throw of 9.81 meters. This is India's second gold medal in the CWG.
India won its second gold medal at the 2026 Commonwealth Games being held in Glasgow. India received its first gold after Mirabai Chanu won in the women's 48 kg weightlifting event, while para-athlete Sharmila Dhankar won India's second gold. The 40-year-old won the country's first-ever para athletics gold medal in Glasgow.
India is now the 8th country in the world with 10 medals. Australia is first with 59 medals (26 gold).

In the final, the women's shot put F57, Sharmila delivered her best throw of the season at 9.81m to secure the top spot on the podium.
She achieved 9.48, 9.58, 9.81, 9.17, 9.37, and 9.60 meters in her six attempts. She achieved her best throw of 9.81 meters in her third attempt.
Sharmila Dhankar was born in Chitrauli village of Haryana. She contracted polio in her left leg at the age of two, but managed to pursue a successful career in para atheletics.

Her first Commonwealth Games appearance was at Birmingham four years ago when she finished fourth. However, she made history by winning gold at her second Commonwealth Games. She became the first Indian to win a gold medal in the women's para shot put F57 event.
