Sports News: The Indian team is scheduled to play a three-match ODI series on its tour of Australia starting October 19th. When the squad was announced, the captaincy was handed over to Shubman Gill, who has now been appointed as the new captain of Team India in this format by the BCCI. Rohit Sharma has also got a place in the 15-member Team India squad for the series against Australia and will be seen playing as a player. Apart from this, Virat Kohli is also a part of the team in this series. Now, Shubman Gill's first statement has come out after getting the responsibility of captaincy in ODIs, in which he has also revealed his target.

Our biggest target is the 2027 ODI World Cup

In his first statement after assuming the ODI captaincy, Shubman Gill, in a video posted by the BCCI, said that his biggest target is the 2027 ODI World Cup. Gill stated that he will have the opportunity to play approximately 20 matches before the ODI World Cup in South Africa. "We will aim to play each series with that goal in mind and in preparation," Gill said. "It is an honor for me to lead the Indian team in ODIs, and I hope to fully meet everyone's expectations with this responsibility."

Rohit And Kohli’s World Cup Future Unclear

There is still no clarity on whether Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli will play in the 2027 ODI World Cup. Keeping this in mind, the BCCI decided to appoint Shubman Gill as the new ODI captain of Team India so that he can have ample opportunity to prepare for this responsibility before the World Cup. Chief selector Ajit Agarkar, in a statement after appointing Shubman Gill as the new ODI captain, said that having different captains for all three formats is not practical.

We are only two years away from the 2027 World Cup, and we are playing significantly fewer matches in this format. Currently, our focus is next year's T20 World Cup. We must also begin planning for the ODI World Cup so that the players have adequate time to prepare.
