Supreme Court Allows Wrestler Vinesh Phogat To Compete In Asian Games 2026 Selection Trials

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Friday allowed wrestler Vinesh Phogat to participate in the selection trials for the Asian Games 2026, scheduled for May 30-31, refusing to stay the Delhi High Court order granting relief to her.

What did the Supreme Court say?

While considering a petition filed by the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) challenging the High Court's order, the Bench comprising of Justice PS Narasimha and Justice Alok Aradhe on Friday declined to stay the High Court's order, thereby clearing the way for Vinesh Phogat to compete in the trials.

However, the Supreme Court expressed some reservations about the Delhi High Court's approach in granting her relief. Despite these concerns, the bench decided not to interfere with the order, as the selection trials were just a day away.

What did the Top Court say to Vinesh Phogat?

The bench gave a specific direction that Vinesh Phogat should be allowed to participate in the trials starting May 30. 

The bench also issued notice to Vinesh Phogat on the WFI (Wrestling Federation of India) petition, saying it would examine these issues later.

What did the Judge say?

While hearing the petition, Justice Narasimha said, "We are not stopping you; you should go and participate in the trials."

The Supreme Court expressed some objections to the High Court's approach. At the beginning of the hearing, Justice Narasimha told senior advocate Madhavi Divan, representing Vinesh Phogat, "We have some questions."

Justice Narasimha said Vinesh Phogat had taken leave in December 2024, stating that she would return in August 2025. She became a mother in July 2025 and informed the WFI that she would be eligible to participate from January 1, 2026.Justice Narasimha said that however, Vinesh Phogat missed the dope test in January and the International Testing Agency (ITA) did not accept her explanation that she had to attend the assembly session proceedings as an MLA in Haryana.

Justice P.S. Narasimha, while praising Vinesh Phogat's talent and her achievements at the international level, said that it is important to follow global sports regulations. "The concern is that when the ITA test is missed, it has serious consequences, as the Indian sports system is linked to the global sports system," Justice Narasimha said.
