Mumbai: The West Indies became the first team to reach the Super 8 in the 2026 T20 World Cup. They achieved this feat by defeating Nepal by 9 wickets at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Sunday. The West Indies have won all their three group matches at the T20 World Cup 2026, leading their group with 6 points, and have qualified for the next stage.

The Caribbean team defeated Scotland comprehensively in their first match. They then crushed England in their second match, defeating them by 30 runs. The Caribbean team defeated Nepal in their third match today.

Does conditions in India and Sri Lanka suit the West Indies?

The 2026 World Cup is being jointly hosted by India and Sri Lanka. History bears witness to the fact that the conditions in India and Sri Lanka suit the West Indies. In the history of the T20 World Cup, the West Indies have won the World Cup twice, and they won under similar conditions. The West Indies won the T20 World Cup in 2012. Following this, the West Indies won the World Cup again in 2016, becoming the first team to win the tournament twice.

The West Indies' first T20 World Cup title in 2012 was played on Sri Lankan pitches. The West Indies dominated the entire edition. They defeated host Sri Lanka by 36 runs in the final played at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo that year.

How have West Indies performed in India?

The West Indies team also performed brilliantly on Indian soil, making the 2016 T20 World Cup historic. The Caribbean team defeated England by four wickets in the final of the 2016 World Cup played in India. This was the same match where West Indies' explosive batsman Carlos Brathwaite smashed four sixes in four balls in Ben Stokes' final over, finishing the match. The West Indies also caused significant heartbreak for the Indian team in that tournament. Team India was defeated in the semi-finals by the Caribbean team, disappointing millions of fans.

Now that the West Indies have reached the Super-8 stage in the 2026 World Cup and the World Cup is being played under Indian-Sri Lankan conditions, the West Indies may once again have the potential to win the World Cup. It will be interesting to see whether the Caribbean team can create history again.
