International News: US President Donald Trump's aggressive tariff strategy has brought tremendous earnings to the US treasury. According to a report by the Financial Times, despite global criticism, Trump's tariff policy has generated additional customs revenue of about $50 billion for the US. Interestingly, most trading partners, except China and Canada, did not offer any major resistance.
Trump's policies were earlier considered a subject of jokes, but now the same strategy is taking America's revenue to new heights. The lack of retaliation by America's trading partners has made Trump's position even stronger in the upcoming election environment.
According to the Financial Times, "America's trading partners offered largely no resistance." US customs revenue reached $64 billion, up $47 billion from the previous year, after Trump imposed global tariffs that included a minimum 10% duty on imports, a 50% tax on steel and aluminum, and a 25% tariff on automobiles.
The report said that only China and Canada responded in a big way to Trump's tariffs. However, the duty imposed by China did not cause any major damage to the US. In May 2025, China's duty revenue on US products increased by just 1.9%. Canada, which had openly criticized Trump's policy, has not yet released any data for the second quarter, and its response has also been quite limited.
The European Union, the world's largest trading bloc, has drafted retaliatory tariffs but has put them on hold until negotiations scheduled for August 1. This delay is also giving Trump a diplomatic advantage.
The report says that Trump, who was earlier mocked for always backing down, is now making the most profit. Trump supporters say that this strategy forced other countries to come to the negotiating table without any economic loss to the US.
According to data from the US Treasury Department, customs duty collection crossed $100 billion in June, giving the government an unexpected budget surplus of $27 billion. Gross collection in June was $27.2 billion, and net collection was $26.6 billion, which is the highest figure so far. Trump's policies were certainly criticized, but America has gained a great benefit from them in terms of revenue. While other countries are still busy deciding their counterstrategy, Trump can make it an electoral weapon.
