Trouble continues to mount for Bikram Singh Majithia, former Punjab minister and senior leader of the Shiromani Akali Dal. After a prolonged standoff, he was arrested on Wednesday by Punjab’s Vigilance team. Now, the police are preparing to file another case against him. The Akali leader was arrested in connection with a Rs 540 crore drug trafficking case. Meanwhile, police sources claim that Majithia and his supporters obstructed the Vigilance team from performing its duties and even attempted to incite violence against the police. A new FIR is now expected to be filed in this matter.
When the Vigilance team reached Majithia’s residence in Amritsar, they faced strong resistance from his supporters. Notably, Majithia himself posted a video over five minutes long on X (formerly Twitter), which showed him arguing with the Vigilance officials. In the footage, he is seen questioning the team's arrival in plainclothes and challenging one officer’s claim of being an SP (Superintendent of Police). Majithia is also heard instructing his supporters to record the entire incident, saying, "Ask whatever you want." In response, the team argued that videography could hinder the questioning process. Based on the Vigilance team's complaint, a new FIR is being prepared.
According to Vigilance officials, Majithia allegedly threatened officers, engaged in pushing and shoving, attempted to destroy evidence, and incited his supporters to attack the police. The team claims that Majithia's supporters obstructed the search operation.
The Vigilance team stated that they had received intelligence about potential key evidence at Majithia’s residence. By the time they arrived, efforts were allegedly made to destroy or hide that evidence. Additionally, the team claimed they had received information about international-level drug traffickers being harbored at his home.
