Chhattisgarh: 41 Villages To Celebrate Republic Day for the First Time Since Independence (X)

Bastar: At least 41 villages formerly under Maoist control in Chhattisgarh's Bastar region will celebrate the 77th Republic Day on Monday, for the first time since Independence

After decades of isolation due to armed extremist influence, the residents of the villages will hoist the national flag and take part in Republic Day events with full ceremonial rituals.

Where are these villages?

The villages are spread across three districts in Bastar, including 13 in Bijapur, 18 in Narayanpur and 10 in Sukma. Most of these places were controlled by the left-wing extremists.

What are the reason for the changes?

Inspector General of Police (Bastar Range) Sundarraj P told media that "The 77th Republic Day will be celebrated for the first time with zeal and enthusiasm in 41 villages of Bastar division. These villages, which had remained disconnected from such national celebrations for decades, are now actively participating in the democratic and constitutional spirit of the nation."

Sundarraj said the recent establishment of security camps in these locations has restored confidence, governance, and public participation.

These camps are now helping to bring regular governance and services like welfare programmes to tribal communities who had been cut off for years.

"This positive transformation has been made possible due to the sustained efforts of security forces and cooperation of local communities. Last year, 13 villages hoisted the national flag for the first time on August 15. Now, a total of 54 villages, including these 13 villages, will celebrate Republic Day for the first time," the IG said.

Several senior cadres have been neutralised and new security camps have been set up.

In last one year, more than 250 maoists were eliminated in separate counter-insurgency operations carried out by security forces in the hinterlands of Bastar.

Earlier, Bastar IG Sundarraj P had informed that  357 maoists were killed across country in a year.
