The chief minister of Delhi Arvind Kejriwal on Thursday approved the proposal to provide one kg of free sugar to over 2.80 lakh unprivileged families in the capital. The proposed scheme will continue till December 2023.

According to the information, the move has been taken by the government to ensure food security for all and aims to alleviate the hardships faced by unprivileged people.

The distribution of sugar will benefit the ration card holders under Antyodaya Anna Yojana (AAY) for one year, effective from January 2023 till December 2023.

“To facilitate the seamless implementation of this scheme, the matter of free distribution of sugar under the Sugar Subsidy Scheme, specifically 1 kg of sugar to Antyodaya Anna Yojana category cardholders, was brought before the Council of Ministers for consideration, which was approved by it,” the statement added

According to the official data, almost 2,80,290 beneficiaries, including 68,747 National Food Security Cardholders, will get benefitted under this scheme. The implementation of this initiative will require an estimated budget of approximately ₹1.11 crores.
