Delhi-NCR wakes up to rain, IMD issues ‘impact’ warning

The residents of Delhi woke up to fresh spells of moderate rain and gusty winds relieving the people of the heat in the national capital on Friday. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued warnings for the region and asked the residents to exercise caution and be prepared for adverse conditions during the morning hours.

IMD shared a post on X(Twitter) which said “Delhi-NCR most likely to experience gusty wind of speed 50-70 kmph and moderate rain with few occasional intense spell due to approaching clouds from NW Uttar Pradesh till around 09:30 of today thereafter gusty wind and rain spell will decrease gradually. Be updated and stay safe”

“Light to moderate intensity rain would occur over and adjoining areas of Shamli, Muzaffarnagar, Kandhla, Khatauli, Chandpur, Kithor, Garhmukteshwar, Gulaoti, Sikandrabad (U.P.) during next 2 hours,” it added.

Expected impacts in Delhi-NCR

• The IMD has issued some effects that could follow after the heavy rainfall in Delhi-NCR.

• The heavy rainfall has the possibility of traffic congestion and creates slippery road conditions. Commuters are advised to exercise caution while driving and consider alternative routes if necessary.

• Occasional reduction in visibility due to heavy rain may also pose challenges for drivers. Caution is to be followed while driving and the use of headlights is encouraged.

• IMD has asked the residents to stay away from items that can conduct electricity and to avoid vulnerable structures as well.

• Routine outdoor businesses are also very likely to be affected due to localised flooding of roads and traffic. It is advisable to stay indoors whenever possible.

• Residents have been asked to get out of water bodies immediately and to avoid touching open electric wires or standing near electric poles.

• Plantations, horticulture, and standing crops may suffer damage as a result of the heavy rainfall. Farmers are encouraged to take preventive measures to protect their crops.

• Vulnerable structures may experience partial damage, including kutcha houses, walls, and huts. Residents can take shelter if needed but at the same time avoid taking shelter under trees.
