Delhi Police to Take to Bicycles for Night Patrols; Dark Lanes to Face Tighter Security (Pankaj rai)
New Delhi: In a new grassroots initiative to strengthen the safety of women and girls and tighten the police crackdown on criminals, the East District Police have introduced a special bicycle patrol campaign across Delhi.
Under the initiative, police personnel will patrol narrow lanes, deserted roads, poorly lit areas and crime-prone locations on bicycles. The special drive, called “Pedalling Through Patrols,” aims to improve police access to places where larger police vehicles cannot easily reach. Women police personnel will also participate in the campaign using pink bicycles.
On October 15, East District Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Rajiv Kumar personally took charge of the initiative. Under his leadership, senior police officers and beat staff conducted a night bicycle patrol from the district police office to Sanjay Lake. During the patrol, they inspected poorly lit locations, narrow streets, densely populated settlements and areas considered vulnerable to crime.
The special patrol initiative will operate twice a week. Additional Deputy Commissioners of Police, Assistant Commissioners of Police, station house officers and beat staff will participate in the exercise.
Kalyanpuri, Trilokpuri, Kondli, Sanjay Lake and surrounding areas have been identified as priority locations for the patrols. Slum settlements and other areas where a stronger police presence is considered necessary will also receive special attention.
The participation of women police personnel is one of the key features of the campaign. Their presence on pink bicycles is expected to strengthen the sense of security among women and girls while making it easier for them to approach the police.
The initiative is aimed not only at preventing crime but also at building communication with local residents and understanding their concerns.
Patrol routes and timings have been planned after analysing crime statistics and crime trends from the past year. The routes will also be reviewed periodically based on local intelligence and suggestions received from residents.
The East District Police have sent a clear message through the initiative: no street should remain beyond police surveillance.
The effectiveness of the bicycle patrol campaign in improving women's safety, preventing crime and strengthening public confidence will be closely watched in the coming weeks.
