New Delhi: The Delhi Police has revealed that 400 criminals were spotted at Jantar Mantar over a five-day period, from July 20 to July 24. In a significant disclosure on Friday, the Delhi Police stated that 400 criminals were observed in the vicinity of the protest site at Jantar Mantar—where the 'Cockroach Janata Party' (CJP) is demonstrating—between July 20 and July 24. The Delhi Police is now investigating the activities and movements of these individuals to determine if they played any role in the incidents of vandalism and violence that occurred in New Delhi on July 20.

How did the Delhi Police identify the criminals?

According to reports, this information came to light through the use of a Facial Recognition System (FRS) installed in the area; this technology instantly retrieves a person's details upon capturing their image via camera. It was through this technology that these criminals were identified.

The police stated that the identified individuals were seen at the CJP protest site in Central Delhi and the surrounding areas over the past five days. Police sources explained that this surveillance system is not intended for ordinary protesters but aims to identify individuals with criminal records who might infiltrate the protest to disrupt law and order. Four FRS units have been deployed at key entry and exit points near the protest site, all directly linked to the Delhi Police database.

According to sources, officials are conducting real-time monitoring using this system, enabling them to instantly identify wanted criminals, individuals with a history of misconduct, or those with criminal backgrounds.

What did the Delhi Police say?

A police source said, "With the help of this technology, hundreds of individuals with criminal backgrounds have been identified so far. It is an effective measure that helps us keep a close watch on those who might attempt to disrupt law and order under the guise of the protest." He said, "This system is equipped with a high-resolution camera capable of capturing facial images from a distance. Once a person's facial image is captured, it is instantly cross-referenced with the police database. If the system identifies a wanted person or a fugitive accused, the concerned police unit is immediately alerted, enabling prompt legal action."

The police stated that this technology also aids in identifying habitual offenders—individuals with a history of repeated involvement in criminal activities who are listed in Delhi Police records as having a "bad character." Meanwhile, another official remarked, "The deployment of this device is expected to assist in both prevention and investigation. It helps us remain vigilant against anti-social elements who might infiltrate protests to create disturbances or disrupt law and order."
