Heavy Rain Batters Delhi A Day After Monsoon Chaos, Flights Cancelled And Delayed

New Delhi: Torrential rains in Delhi-NCR have disrupted people's lives. The heavy rain on Monday affected not only the roads but also air travel. At Delhi airport, 26 flights had to be cancelled, 15 flights had to be diverted to other cities and more than 390 flights were delayed. Many places were flooded with water and there was traffic jam for hours. Rain continued in many areas on Tuesday morning and the Meteorological Department has warned of heavy rain, thunder and strong wind even today.

How many flights were affected at the airport?

The biggest impact of Monday's rain was seen at Indira Gandhi Airport. Due to bad weather and low visibility, 26 flights were completely cancelled. 15 flights which were coming to Delhi could not land. Apart from this, more than 390 flights flew much later than their scheduled time. Due to this, passengers had to wait for hours at the airport.

Where were the flights diverted?

The flights which could not land in Delhi were sent to nearby cities. Most of the flights were sent to Jaipur, while some flights were diverted to Chandigarh and Lucknow.

How much more rain did Delhi receive than normal?

This time the August rains in Delhi have broken all records. If we look at the figures till August 24, Safdarjung received 246.2 mm rainfall, which is 29% more than normal. Palam received 227.2 mm rainfall, 28% more than normal. Lodhi Road received 233.2 mm rainfall, 22% more than normal.

Where did it rain the most?

It did not rain equally in all areas of Delhi. The ridge recorded 243 mm rainfall which is 50% more than normal. Whereas Aya Nagar received 266.3 mm rainfall, which is 66% more than normal.

Why is it raining so heavily?

According to IMD, not just one but many systems are responsible for this. On one side, Western Disturbance is active, while on the other side, a trough is formed at lower levels. This trough extends from the low pressure area over Bengal to south-west UP. Due to the collision of these two, an environment has been created for heavy rain in Delhi-NCR.

What is the condition on the roads?

It seems as if it has become an ocean on the roads. Many places in Delhi, Noida and Gurugram were filled with knee-deep water. People going home from office were stuck in traffic for hours. Vehicles were stopped due to water logging in many underpasses.

Will it rain further?

At present, there is little chance of relief. The Meteorological Department says that similar rains will continue in Delhi for the next 1-2 days. There may be moderate rain at some places and heavy to very heavy rain at other places.
