New Delhi: Delhi is preparing for a major transformation of its agricultural markets, with a focus on modern infrastructure and improved facilities for farmers, traders and workers. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta laid the foundation stones for four development projects on Friday at the Agricultural Produce Marketing Committee (APMC) office in Azadpur under the Seva Sankalp Abhiyan.

The projects, planned for Keshopur, Narela and Azadpur markets, are expected to improve market infrastructure and strengthen facilities for stakeholders. The Chief Minister said the government's objective was not merely to repair ageing infrastructure but to develop a robust system capable of meeting requirements over the next 100 years.

What Are the Four Major Development Projects?

The projects cover road construction, storage facilities, drainage improvements and modern weighing systems across Delhi's agricultural markets.

  • Keshopur Fruit and Vegetable Market: Old internal roads will be reconstructed at a cost of ₹9.48 crore to improve movement within the market.

  • Narela New Grain Market: Two temporary sheds will be constructed to help farmers store their grain safely.

  • Azadpur Market, Sections B and C: The existing sewerage and drainage systems will be upgraded to address infrastructure-related issues.

  • Azadpur Market Entry and Exit Gates: A modern slow-speed weighbridge system will be installed to record the weight of commercial vehicles without requiring them to stop, improving transparency and operational efficiency.

Focus on Safety, Sanitation and Workers' Welfare

Alongside infrastructure development, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta emphasised the need to improve CCTV surveillance, control centres, lighting arrangements, waste disposal systems and healthcare facilities.

She also highlighted the importance of providing better facilities for workers employed in the markets, underlining the government's broader focus on improving working conditions and ensuring a more organised market environment.

Narela Expansion and Tikri Khampur Market Plans Gain Momentum

Development Minister Kapil Mishra said that projects that had remained stalled in the markets for nearly three decades were now being accelerated.

He also highlighted ongoing efforts to expand the Narela market and develop a new flower market. The development process for Tikri Khampur Mandi is also progressing.

The initiatives form part of a broader effort to modernise Delhi's agricultural market infrastructure, improve operational efficiency and provide better facilities for farmers, traders and labourers.
