New Delhi: Delhi Metro commuters will now be able to check crowd levels inside individual coaches before boarding a train. The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has extended its real-time passenger density information system to the Pink Line, following its successful implementation on the Magenta Line.
The facility will allow passengers to identify relatively less crowded coaches while waiting on the platform. It is expected to be particularly useful during morning and evening peak hours, helping commuters make more informed boarding decisions.
The technology uses weight-measuring sensors installed inside each metro coach to estimate passenger occupancy. These sensors assess the total weight inside a coach and compare it with the standard weight of an empty coach to calculate the percentage of passenger load.
The information is displayed on passenger information screens installed on platforms shortly before the train arrives. Coaches are identified from C-1 to C-6, allowing commuters to compare crowd levels across the train and choose a suitable coach.
Implementing the system on the Pink Line presented a technical challenge because of its circular route. According to the information provided by DMRC, the corporation developed a mechanism to integrate the data and successfully extend the facility to the line.
The initiative is expected to help distribute passengers more evenly across coaches and reduce overcrowding in individual compartments. It can also save commuters time, make boarding and alighting more convenient, and improve the use of available space.
DMRC views the expansion as an important step towards using modern technology to improve passenger convenience and make daily metro journeys more comfortable.
