Delhi Police Explains Jantar Mantar Restrictions, Stresses Security and Democratic Rights (Facebook)
New Delhi: Ahead of the proposed protest on October 10 in the capital Delhi, Delhi Police has clarified the reason behind the temporary restrictions imposed in Jantar Mantar and surrounding areas. Police say that peaceful demonstration is an important right of democracy, but it is also their responsibility to ensure the safety of constitutional institutions, common citizens, businessmen and travelers in New Delhi.
Additional CP PRO Rajeev Ranjan said that despite getting permission for one day's demonstration at Jantar Mantar in July, the protest continued for almost a month. According to the police, more than 200 policemen were injured during this period and innocent students were also injured in the violent incidents. The police have also termed the incidents of alleged molestation and assault on women policemen during the protests last week as a matter of serious concern.
Police clarified that Jantar Mantar has the capacity to safely assemble about a thousand people at a time. In such a situation, it is necessary to keep in mind the size of the crowd, emergency routes, traffic and public safety. Necessary permission has not been taken by CJP for the proposed demonstration. The police have appealed to the organizers to follow the law and inform the participants about the legal provisions. The Supreme Court has also stressed the importance of following legal rules related to public demonstrations. Delhi Police said the restrictions are temporary and precautionary. The objective is not to suppress anyone's voice, but to ensure crowd control, law and order and safety of the common people.
