Seven Apprehended in Sonia Vihar Murder Case, Including Two Juveniles; Four Arrested for Alleged Extortion Conspiracy in New Usmanpur (Pankaj Rai)
New Delhi: Delhi Police have uncovered two serious criminal cases in the Northeast district, involving the alleged contract killing of a 34-year-old man in Sonia Vihar and a firing incident outside a businessman's residence in New Usmanpur linked to an alleged extortion plot. Seven accused, including two juveniles in conflict with the law, have been apprehended in the murder case, while four people have been arrested in connection with the extortion case.
According to police, investigators examined footage from more than 200 CCTV cameras, analysed technical evidence and questioned suspects to reconstruct the alleged conspiracies. Joint Commissioner of Police, Eastern Range, Milind Mahadev Dumbere, shared details of the investigations during a press briefing at Delhi Police Headquarters.
Police said Manish Yadav, 34, was shot in the head at around 9.10 pm on October 13, 2026, at Saade Char Pushta in Sonia Vihar. He was taken by a neighbour to Sushrut Trauma Centre, where he died during treatment.
Initial information indicated that two helmet-wearing men on a motorcycle had carried out the shooting. Sonia Vihar Police Station registered a case under Sections 103(1) and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and relevant provisions of the Arms Act.
During the investigation, police examined footage from more than 200 CCTV cameras and analysed witness statements and technical evidence. Investigators subsequently alleged that Umesh Maurya alias Mayank, Vivek Singh and their associates had planned the murder. Personal relationships and Umesh's marital dispute have emerged as possible motives, according to police.
Investigators allege that two juveniles were promised ₹2 lakh to carry out the killing. A firearm and ammunition were allegedly arranged, along with a motorcycle. Police claim Manish was called out of his home on the pretext of returning money before the two juveniles allegedly opened fire. An attempt to fire a third shot reportedly failed, after which the attackers fled on the motorcycle.
Vivek Singh, Umesh Maurya, Anand, Nitin alias Narendra, Bhim Singh and two juveniles have been apprehended in connection with the case.
Police said they recovered a semi-automatic pistol, two live cartridges and a motorcycle. Bhim Singh is allegedly suspected of supplying the weapon. Investigators are also examining financial transactions and other technical evidence.
The second incident occurred at around 12.55 am on October 15 in Lane No. 9 near First Pushta in New Usmanpur.
The complainant, a wholesale T-shirt businessman operating in the Gandhi Nagar textile market, told police that a shot had been fired at the main entrance of his residence. CCTV footage reportedly showed two masked suspects arriving on a motorcycle. According to the complaint, the person riding pillion threw an object into the premises before firing at the entrance and fleeing.
A threatening note was also found near the scene. The businessman further alleged that he had received an extortion demand from a foreign phone number.
Police said CCTV analysis and technical surveillance brought Monty under suspicion. Investigators also found that Akash alias Veeru had allegedly offered to settle the matter with the businessman for several lakhs of rupees.
According to police, Ekant Bhati alias Sanju Bhati alias Masterji allegedly conspired with Monty, Akash and Ashish Dedha to intimidate the businessman and extort money. Two alleged shooters were reportedly assigned to execute the plan.
Ekant Bhati, Akash alias Veeru, Monty and Ashish Dedha have been arrested. Police have recovered three mobile phones that allegedly contain important technical evidence. Efforts are underway to trace the suspected shooters and other individuals potentially involved in the case.
The investigations were conducted under the supervision of Northeast District Deputy Commissioner of Police Rahul Alwal and Additional DCP Sandeep Lamba, with teams from the relevant police stations and specialised units involved in the operations.
In the Sonia Vihar case, the team worked under ACP Yatin Sharma and included Inspector Prafull Kumar Jha, Sonia Vihar Station House Officer Inspector Deepak Pandey, AATS in-charge Inspector Deepak Verma, Sub-Inspector Abhimanyu Nain, Head Constables Sachin, Vinod and Deepak, and Constables Milan, Vishal and Azad, among other personnel.
