New Delhi: In a major crackdown on illegal liquor distribution ahead of Diwali, West District Police have arrested a suspected liquor smuggler and recovered 2,880 bottles of Royal Green liquor from a car near Basai Darapur in the Moti Nagar police station area. The seizure comprised 30 cartons of liquor, allegedly being transported for illegal distribution. Police also impounded the Hyundai i10 used to carry the consignment.
The action was carried out by the district police's Special Staff as part of a festival-season drive to prevent the unauthorised supply of liquor in the capital.
West District Deputy Commissioner of Police Hareshwar V. Swami said the police had intensified surveillance to curb illegal liquor supplies during the festive period. Acting on specific information about a suspected consignment, a team led by Inspector Rajesh Maurya set up an interception near Basai Darapur under the supervision of Assistant Commissioner of Police Rajesh Kumar.
The team stopped the suspicious vehicle and searched it, recovering 30 cartons containing the liquor bottles. The driver was identified as Nitin Kumar, 34, a resident of Raghuvir Nagar in Shivaji Enclave.
Police registered a case under the relevant provisions of the Excise Act at Moti Nagar police station and seized both the liquor and the vehicle.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the accused had allegedly collected the liquor from a warehouse in Bahadurgarh, Haryana, and was planning to transport it to unauthorised liquor sellers in Raghuvir Nagar.
According to police records, Kumar had previously been involved in six cases registered under the Excise Act. Investigators are examining the alleged supply chain to identify the source of the consignment and establish whether other individuals were involved in the operation.
The police operation involved Assistant Sub-Inspector Kaptan, Head Constable Devender and Constable Gurmeet. The action was carried out under the overall supervision of DCP Hareshwar V. Swami.
Police said the investigation would continue to trace the distribution network and determine the involvement of any additional suspects. The seizure forms part of ongoing efforts to prevent illegal liquor sales and maintain law and order in the city ahead of Diwali.
