Delhi Protests Over CEC’s Resignation, Voter List Irregularities (Pankaj Rai)
New Delhi: Protests in the national capital over demands for Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar’s resignation and alleged irregularities in electoral rolls under the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) continued on Tuesday. Amid slogans on the streets, police action and the detention of political leaders, tensions remained high in the capital. Protesters maintained their opposition, while Delhi Police remained on alert to maintain law and order. Commuters were advised to exercise caution as traffic disruptions were expected on several major roads.
Despite Jantar Mantar being removed from the list of designated protest sites, attempts to demonstrate continued. Cockroach Janata Party leaders Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka were detained by police while attempting to reach Jantar Mantar.
Party founder Abhijeet Dipke said the voice of protest should not be suppressed through administrative notifications. The organisation also claimed to have issued a 24-hour ultimatum to the police.
The Indian National Students' Union (NSUI), the student wing of the Congress, staged a sudden protest outside Gate No. 7 of the Rajiv Chowk Metro Station in Connaught Place, demanding the resignation of the Chief Election Commissioner.
Police detained some of the protesters during the demonstration. The organisation indicated that it would continue its protests in Connaught Place if permission to demonstrate at Jantar Mantar was denied.
Meanwhile, Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi invited MPs from the Opposition alliance, civil society representatives and student organisations to his residence for a discussion over tea.
Several leaders, including Sonia Gandhi, Shashi Tharoor, Sachin Pilot and Yogendra Yadav, attended the meeting to discuss the next course of action.
On Monday, Opposition leaders had marched towards the Supreme Court over issues concerning democracy and electoral rolls.
Traffic remained affected at several prominent locations across Lutyens’ Delhi on Tuesday, including Panchkuian Roundabout, Mandi House, Connaught Place, Ashoka Road and Rail Bhawan.
The disruptions caused considerable inconvenience to the public. Road closures and security restrictions in several areas due to protests resulted in heavy traffic congestion, leaving commuters struggling to reach their destinations.
The Opposition has been alleging irregularities in electoral rolls, while disagreements over the Election Commission’s revision process continue. Security arrangements remain tight across the capital, and attention is now focused on how the ongoing wave of protests will shape the political situation in the coming days.
