New Delhi: Gold worth approximately ₹4.03 crore was seized at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport after customs officials discovered 3.20 kg of gold bars concealed inside a floor spring in a passenger’s luggage. The Indian passenger had arrived from Dubai when officers flagged him for further inspection.
According to information provided by the Customs Department, the incident took place on October 19, 2026. The passenger arrived in Delhi aboard Emirates flight EK-512 from Dubai and was selected for inspection after officials noticed suspicious activity.
During a detailed examination of his baggage, customs personnel discovered gold bars hidden inside a floor spring, a component commonly used in floor-mounted door mechanisms. The concealment appeared designed to make the precious metal difficult to detect during routine checks.
Officials recovered a total of 3.20 kilograms of gold, with its estimated value placed at around ₹4.03 crore. The discovery followed a thorough search by the customs team.
The passenger was stopped for inspection based on suspicion, allowing officers to examine his belongings more closely. The hidden gold was found only after the floor spring was checked carefully, exposing the suspected smuggling attempt.
The incident highlights how individuals allegedly involved in gold smuggling may use unusual objects to conceal valuable goods. It also underscores the importance of alert officers and detailed baggage inspections at international airports.
Following the seizure, a case was registered under the Customs Act, 1962. Further investigation is underway to establish the circumstances surrounding the recovery and examine the suspected smuggling operation.
The seizure at IGI Airport demonstrates the role of vigilance and detailed screening in detecting suspected gold smuggling, even when the metal is concealed inside everyday objects.
