Independence Day 2026: Delhi Traffic Advisory Issued, Check Road Closures And Diversions

New Delhi: In view of the celebrations to be held at the Red Fort on Independence Day, the traffic system in Delhi has been changed. According to Delhi Traffic Police, there will be a ban on movement of normal vehicles in the Red Fort and surrounding areas from 4 am to 10 am on August 15. Only vehicles with valid labels will be allowed on some roads. The police have appealed to the people to go towards these areas only when necessary and to decide their route before leaving the house.

Which roads will remain closed around the Red Fort?

On the morning of 15th August, vehicular movement will remain closed on Netaji Subhash Marg from Delhi Gate to Chatta Rail Chowk. Common vehicles will also not be allowed to enter from GPO Delhi to Chatta Rail Chowk on Lodhian Road and from HC Sen Marg to Yamuna Bazar Chowk on SP Mukherjee Marg. The road from Fountain Chowk to Red Fort on Chandni Chowk Road will remain closed. There will also be restrictions on Nishad Raj Marg, Esplanade Road and Link Road and Ring Road between Rajghat and ISBT Kashmiri Gate.

Which routes are advised to be avoided?

Those who do not have a valid parking label have been advised to avoid C-Hexagon India Gate, Copernicus Marg, Mandi House, Tilak Marg, Mathura Road and BSZ Marg. Normal traffic will also be affected on Netaji Subhash Marg and JL Nehru Marg in the morning. Commuters have also been asked to take alternative routes on the Ring Road between Nizamuddin Khatta to ISBT Kashmiri Gate and the Outer Ring Road connected to Salimgarh Bypass.

What will be the route for those going in North-South direction?

The traffic police have suggested an alternative route for those travelling between North and South Delhi. Travellers can reach 11 Murti via Aurobindo Marg via Safdarjung Road, Kamal Ataturk Marg, Kautilya Marg and SP Marg. After this, Mother Teresa Crescent, Park Street, Mandir Marg, Panchkuian Road and Rani Jhansi Road can be used.

Which route will be better between East and West Delhi?

Drivers going from East Delhi to West Delhi can take the route via NH-24/NH-9 via Nizamuddin Khatta, Barapulla Road and Ring Road. One can also travel from DND via Barapula Road and Ring Road. The traffic police have advised passengers to use these alternative routes instead of going on the restricted roads.

What will those going to North Delhi from Trans-Yamuna have to do?

To go to North Delhi from Trans-Yamuna area, one can take Pusta Road to GT Road and then via Yudhishthir Setu to reach ISBT Kashmiri Gate. On this route also, drivers will have to follow the instructions of the traffic police. Due to security arrangements around the Red Fort, there may be additional checking on the way.

What restrictions will there be on goods vehicles and interstate buses?

According to the traffic police, movement of goods vehicles will remain closed between Nizamuddin Khatta and Wazirabad Bridge from 12 am on August 14 to 11 am on August 15. Apart from this, interstate buses between Maharana Pratap ISBT and Sarai Kale Khan ISBT will also not run during this period. The routes of DTC and other city buses on the affected roads will also be changed as per the traffic system.

The police have asked people to leave home earlier and allow extra time if travel is necessary on the morning of August 15. Drivers should follow the traffic signs, variable message signs and instructions of policemen on the way.
