Independence Day: Visiting Red Fort On August 15? Know These 4 Rules Or You May Be Turned Away

New Delhi: The country is going to celebrate its 80th Independence Day on 15th August. In the main ceremony to be held at the Red Fort in Delhi, the Prime Minister will hoist the national flag and address the nation. Like every year, this time too a large number of invited guests and people are expected to attend the function. In such a situation, the security and traffic arrangements around the Red Fort will be much tighter than on normal days. If you are going to attend the function, then you have to keep some important things in mind so that there is no problem at the time of entry. 

Will it be possible to enter without identity card?

It is very important to carry the necessary documents with you for entry into the Independence Day celebrations. A valid identity card should also be carried along with the documents related to the ticket or invitation. As per the latest available information, identification documents may be asked during entry. Therefore, while leaving home, always carry Aadhar Card, Voter ID, Passport or any other valid government identity card. Not having documents can cause unnecessary trouble during security check. 

Can visitors take a professional camera?

All types of photography and recording equipment are not allowed at the venue. It is important to check the instructions issued before arriving, especially with large or professional camera equipment. Luggage is checked at multiple levels before entry into a high-security event like Independence Day. Therefore, if the rules regarding any camera, lens or recording equipment are not clear then it would be better to avoid taking it with you. This will also save time in security checking.

Which items may be heavy to carry?

As per the security arrangements, sharp objects, weapons and such items which may pose a security threat are not allowed to be taken to the venue of the ceremony. Avoid carrying knives, matches and other suspicious or prohibited items. Delhi Police has been issuing different advisories regarding prohibited items and security during Independence Day. Therefore, before going to the program, it would be best to see the latest instructions of that day.

Is it safe to go to Red Fort by car?

On August 15, changes are made in the traffic arrangements in the Red Fort and surrounding areas. In such a situation, those arriving by private vehicle should gather information about parking in advance. Parking a vehicle where parking is not permitted may result in challan or other action. In previous Independence Day celebrations, additional car parking arrangements were also made and metro service was started early in the morning for the convenience of the people. It will be necessary to see the advisory of Delhi Traffic Police for final instructions related to parking and traffic in 2026. 

Will it be beneficial to reach early?

Those arriving at the event should allow sufficient time for security checks and the entry process. Apart from security checks, there is barricading and traffic control at many places around the Red Fort. In such a situation, there may be a rush to enter when the program is very close to the start. It would be better to check the entry gate and timings given on the ticket or invitation in advance.

Is cloakroom facility available at the venue?

In previous Independence Day celebrations, cloakroom arrangements were made for the convenience of visitors. In 2025, 25 cloakrooms were built at 12 locations so that people do not have to enter the venue carrying unnecessary luggage. However, what form this system will take in 2026 should be confirmed only from the latest official instructions related to the programme.

It is most important for those going to the Independence Day celebrations at the Red Fort to keep their entry documents, valid identity cards and travel related information ready in advance. Do not carry prohibited items and follow instructions regarding parking or traffic. It would be safest to leave after seeing the final advisory issued by Delhi Police and Administration, because the rules related to security and traffic can be changed till the last moment.
