New Delhi: Northern Railway has launched a specialised capacity-building programme to enhance the technical skills of Traction Power Controllers (TPCs), strengthening electrical safety and ensuring reliable train operations. The initiative focuses on improving technical expertise, emergency response capabilities and coordination among railway personnel responsible for managing the power supply essential to train movement.
The first three-day training session was held from October 12 to 14, 2026, at the Electrical Training Centre in Ghaziabad. Fourteen participants from Northern Railway’s Jammu, Firozpur, Ambala, Delhi, Moradabad and Lucknow divisions attended the programme.
Northern Railway plans to conduct six training sessions by the end of November 2026, covering personnel from all six divisions.
Traction Power Controllers play a crucial role in railway operations. Their responsibilities include monitoring and controlling the 25,000-volt traction power supply, coordinating with field staff and taking necessary action during power disruptions. Their technical competence is therefore essential to maintaining safe and uninterrupted train services.
On the first day, participants received training on TPC responsibilities, Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems, traction substation safety and operational coordination.
The second day featured practical exercises on a SCADA training simulator, allowing participants to tackle challenges resembling real-world operational situations. On the final day, trainees visited the 25,000-volt traction substation in Chanakyapuri to gain hands-on insights into equipment operation and safety procedures.
The programme concluded with an assessment of participants’ knowledge, collection of feedback and distribution of certificates.
Through this initiative, Northern Railway aims to equip its workforce with modern technical knowledge and improve its ability to respond swiftly and effectively to emergencies. The training is expected to strengthen coordination, support timely decision-making and contribute to safer and more dependable railway operations.
