Protest Turns Chaotic; Three Cases Registered at Parliament Street and Connaught Place Police Stations (Pankaj Rai)
New Delhi: The political demonstration organised by the INDIA Alliance against the Central Election Commission in the highly sensitive New Delhi area on Wednesday witnessed considerable chaos. Following a scuffle and alleged misbehaviour between protesters and Delhi Police personnel deployed for security, the police have now initiated legal action.
According to police sources, several cases have been registered in connection with allegations of disrupting security arrangements, manhandling police personnel, obstructing government work, disobeying police instructions and entering government premises without permission during the protest.
According to police sources, violations of the prohibitory orders imposed in the New Delhi area during the protest have also been taken seriously. Two cases have been registered at Parliament Street Police Station and one at Connaught Place Police Station for allegedly violating orders issued under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS).
The police are now examining the activities that took place during the protest, the people present at the spot and other evidence related to the incident.
Tension prevailed at the protest site after some demonstrators allegedly attempted to cross the security cordon and failed to comply with police instructions. Police sources said personnel deployed at the spot took necessary steps to bring the situation under control and maintain law and order.
During the incident, there were alleged instances of scuffling and misbehaviour between some protesters and police personnel.
The police said that while everyone has the right to protest democratically, no one can be allowed to violate rules in sensitive government premises or restricted areas. Action will be taken as per law against anyone found disturbing law and order or ignoring lawful police instructions.
CCTV cameras installed at the site and video footage recorded during the protest have emerged as key elements of the police investigation.
According to police sources, available videos and other digital evidence are being examined in detail. The footage is being used to identify individuals who allegedly scuffled with police personnel, obstructed government work or violated prohibitory orders.
Further legal action will be taken against those found responsible based on the evidence emerging during the investigation.
The police are also examining the extent to which the security arrangements were affected during the protest and the role played by individuals allegedly involved in violations of the law.
The political protest and sloganeering on the streets of New Delhi on Wednesday created a tense situation, and the next phase of the incident has now moved to police action and investigation.
With three cases registered, the police are examining video evidence and preparing for further legal action against those allegedly involved in the incidents.
