New Delhi: In a move aimed at encouraging girls' education and promoting self-reliance, 180 Class 9 students received bicycles under the Delhi government's Vidya Vahini Udaan Scheme during a special programme organised in the Shahdara Assembly constituency.

The distribution ceremony was held at a government school in Bhola Nath Nagar No. 3. The initiative is intended to make daily travel to and from school easier for students while encouraging them to continue their education.

Shahdara MLA Sanjay Goyal and Delhi BJP chief spokesperson Anil Gupta attended the programme. School representative Akanksha Garg was also present. The public representatives interacted with the students and spoke to them about their experiences and excitement after receiving the bicycles.

Despite the rainy weather, the students participated enthusiastically. Yellow balloons tied to the bicycles lined up across the school grounds added colour to the occasion, while teachers and parents also attended the event.

How will the scheme benefit schoolgirls?

MLA Sanjay Goyal said Class 9 is an important stage in a student's academic journey. He noted that bicycles would help girls reach school on time and make their return journeys more convenient.

He added that the initiative could encourage self-confidence, self-respect and discipline among students while also supporting their physical well-being.

Scheme introduced in the 2026-27 Budget

The Vidya Vahini Udaan Scheme was provided for in the Delhi Budget for the financial year 2026-27 by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta.

During the programme, appreciation was expressed towards Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta and the senior party leadership for supporting the initiative.

The scheme aims to improve girls' access to education, encourage healthier lifestyles and help them move towards greater independence. Through bicycle distribution, the programme seeks to reduce commuting difficulties and support students in pursuing their educational goals.
