Only eight people out of the 33 passengers survived the horrific bus accident in Buldhana, Maharashtra on Saturday, where 25 passengers lost their lives.

Yogesh Ramdas Gavai, a survivor of the Buldhana accident, narrated how he and a few fellow passengers broke the rear window of the burning vehicle and escaped to safety.

“I boarded the Vidarbha Travels bus from Nagpur for Aurangabad. The bus overturned and caught fire immediately after it met with an accident on the Samruddhi Mahamarg expressway. 3 to 4 people broke the window and escaped, and soon after there was a blast in the bus,” he said.

A resident told that many survivors signalled other vehicles on the highway for help, but no one stopped. “Many accidents take place on this route at Pimpalkhuta. We were called for help and when we went there, we saw the horrible situation. The tyres had fallen apart…The fire was so intense that we could not do anything. We were in tears,” the local resident told PTI.

Came to know about the accident after I heard mother’s cry: Buldhana victim’s relative

Relatives of the victims who lost their lives in the bus accident narrated their ordeal. Chitra Dagale, a relative of victim Avanti Pohnekar, said, “Avanti has recently completed her BE, she had left from Wardha yesterday evening to find a job in Pune. I spoke to her when she was leaving her home. This morning when I heard the cry of her mother, then I came to know about this accident.”

Anil Jangle, brother of the deceased Sherya Wanjari, said, “Sherya and her friend Radhika Kharse left Wardha for Pune at 7.30 pm yesterday. In the morning we came to know about the accident. Both of them used to work in Pune.”

The survivors, who were admitted to the Deulgaon Raja Rural Hospital, were visited by Buldhana Commissioner Nidhi Pande.

Maharashtra minister Girish Mahajan also visited the victims and heard their statements.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences to the victims of the tragedy and announced an ex gratia relief of ₹2 lakh for the relatives of deceased victims, and ₹50,000 for those who were injured.
