No eligible voter will be removed, Bengal polls to be held in 'violence-free environment': CEC Gyanesh Kumar (x)
Kolkata: Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar on Tuesday, while addressing a press conference, asserted that no eligible voter's name would be removed from the electoral rolls and said the Election Commission's priority was to ensure free, fair and peaceful elections in West Bengal.
After holding a series of meetings with political parties and officials, Gyanesh Kumar addressed a press conference in Kolkata and said that the people of West Bengal have always believed in peaceful and participatory democracy.
"Our aim is to ensure free and fair elections and peaceful polls in Bengal," he said.
"Democracy runs very deep in West Bengal. Voting percentage in the state has remained very high. Electors and the public at large respect the Constitution and believe in peaceful and participatory elections," the CEC said.
During the press conference, Gyanesh Kumar said that every eligible voter would have the opportunity to cast their ballot. "No eligible voter's name will be removed," he said.
"Recently, the final electoral roll of West Bengal, which was released, has a total of 7 crore 8 lakh names, and if those under adjudication are removed, then the names of 6,44,52,609 voters are listed as eligible voters in that list," Kumar said.
"The commission appeals to all voters of the state to ensure that polling takes place in a violence-free and intimidation-free atmosphere," he added.

While talking about the electoral exercise in the state, the Chief Election Commissioner said that West Bengal has around 80,000 polling stations, of which about 61,000 are located in rural areas.
Kumar also announced that the Election Commission would implement 100 per cent webcasting at polling booths across the state to enhance transparency during the voting process.
