Golden Temple illuminates on occasion of Guru Nanak Jayanti

The sacred shrine Golden Temple has been illuminated on the occasion of Guru Nanak Jayanti on Monday, November 27, 2023. The day is celebrated on the Purnima Tithi of Kartik Maas. 

The festival commonly known as Guru Purab, is a sacred festival that marks the birth anniversary of the first guru of Sikhism, Guru Nanak Dev.

Since it marks the birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, the first of the ten Sikh gurus and the man who founded Sikhism, it is a significant day in Sikhism. The event is well-known for its intense devotion, spiritual get-togethers, and hymns recited from the sacred book of Sikhism, the Guru Granth Sahib.

This year, on Monday, November 27, Sikhs across the world will celebrate this momentous occasion with the deepest love and respect.

Kartik Purnima, or the full moon date of Kartik month, is when the auspicious event takes place every year. On this day, Parkash Utsav is also observed.

Significance and history of Guru Nanak Jayanti

The significant day is celebrated to commemorate the birth anniversary of the first of the 10 Sikh gurus and the sounder of Sikhism, Guru Nanak Dev Ji. The day has special values for its fervent devotion, spiritual gatherings, and the recitation of hymns from the Guru Granth Sahib, Sikhism's holy scripture.

Guru Nanak Dev was born in 1469 in the village of Rai Bhoi di Talwani, today known as Nankana Sahib, near Lahore, Pakistan. The first guru of Sikhs had been devoted to the divine since childhood and spent his whole life promoting equality and tolerance.

Numerous hymns composed by Guru Nanak were collected by Guru Arjan into the Adi Granth. He visited sites of pilgrimage throughout India. The central theme of the Guru Granth Sahib's verses is that there is only one creator of the cosmos. The lesson of unselfish dedication to humanity was also spread by his words.

The langar food and Kada Prasad, which is considered auspicious, and the traditional prasad is served on this day. Many people also participate in Sewa at Gurudwaras across the world.
