Day After Noida Violence, UP Govt Approves Wage Hike Up to Rs 3,000 for Workers

Noida: A day after massive workers' protests in Noida, the Yogi Adityanath government has given a major relief to the workers by increasing the minimum wages across worker categories by up to Rs 3,000. Now, unskilled workers will get a salary of Rs 13,690 per month, while skilled workers will get Rs 16,868.

What did government say?

The salaries of the workers of Noida and Ghaziabad have been increased significantly. On Tuesday, a day after the violent protests, a high-level committee announced a salary increase for the workers. Now, unskilled workers will get a salary of Rs 13,690 per month, while skilled workers will get Rs 16,868.

Following recent protests by workers in Noida and Ghaziabad, the Uttar Pradesh government decided late Monday night to revise the minimum wage. The monthly wage for unskilled labourers in Noida and Ghaziabad has now been increased from Rs 11,313 to Rs 13,690. This will take effect April 1.

What is the new revised structure?

Under the revised structure in Gautam Buddh Nagar and Ghaziabad, unskilled workers will now get Rs 13,690 per month, up from Rs 11,313. 

According to an official statement, semi-skilled workers will receive Rs 15,059, while skilled workers will get Rs 16,868.

The government has also implemented wage increases at varying rates in other municipal corporations and districts across the state. This move comes amid growing demands from workers for better wages and improved working conditions.

In other municipal corporation areas, monthly wages have been fixed at Rs 13,006 for unskilled workers, Rs 14,306 for semi-skilled workers and Rs 16,025 for skilled workers.

For the remaining districts, unskilled workers will earn Rs 12,356 per month, semi-skilled workers Rs 13,591 and skilled workers Rs 15,224.

What did the officials say?

On Tuesday, Gautam Buddh Nagar District Magistrate Medha Roopam said that the revision was approved by a high-powered committee and has been made effective retrospectively from April 1.

"The wage increase has been done by the high-powered committee. The decision was approved by CM UP late last night," Roopam said.

What happen during the protest?

Violence erupted on Monday in Noida during a demonstration by factory workers while demanding a salary increase. Several vehicles, including a police vehicle, were set on fire in industrial areas, and public property was damaged. There were also incidents of stone-pelting at several locations.

The protest brought traffic to a standstill. Thousands of commuters were stranded on various roads leading to Delhi during the morning rush hour.

Large number of workers from various industrial units located in Phase-2 and Sector-60 gathered in the morning. They raised slogans and demonstrated to press for their long-pending demand for salary revision.
