Another Name Change In Uttar Pradesh: Jalalabad Tehsil To Be Called Bhagwan Parshuram Puri

Lucknow: The Uttar Pradesh government has decided to change the name of Jalalabad tehsil of Shahjahanpur district. In the cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, the proposal to rename the tehsil as 'Bhagwan Parshuram Puri' was approved. The government says that this decision has been taken keeping in mind the historical and religious heritage of the area. After the approval of the Cabinet, the proposal will now be sent to the central government for further formal process.

What was the main reason for changing the name?

According to government sources, Jalalabad area is considered a major center of faith associated with Lord Parshuram. Every year a large number of devotees come to visit the ancient Parshuram temple located here. For a long time, local people and various social organisations were demanding to name the tehsil after Lord Parshuram. Keeping this demand in mind, the government has taken this decision.

Had the demand been raised at the local level before?

The demand for name change is not new. Earlier, a proposal in this regard had also been passed in the Municipal Council meeting. Local public representatives have argued that the new name will strengthen the cultural identity of the area more than the current name. The government also believes that it is necessary to preserve the identity of places of historical importance.

Have the names of many cities been changed before?

The names of many cities and towns in Uttar Pradesh have been changed over the years. Allahabad was named Prayagraj, Faizabad was named Ayodhya and Mughalsarai was named Pandit Deendayal Upadhyay Nagar. Now the decision to change the name of Jalalabad tehsil is also being considered a part of the same series. The government says that the purpose of such decisions is to give a new identity to the historical and cultural heritage.

Now what will be the next process?

After getting approval from the cabinet, the proposal will be sent to the central government. After getting the final approval from there, the new name will be recorded in revenue records, government documents, maps and other administrative records. After this Jalalabad tehsil will be officially known as 'Bhagwan Parshuram Puri'.

This decision of name change is being considered important from both political and social viewpoint. On one hand, the government is linking it with respect for cultural heritage, while the opposition has been raising questions from time to time regarding such decisions.
