Lucknow: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has ordered the suspension of four officials following a fire tragedy in Lucknow. The suspensions came with immediate effect. The suspended officials are Gaurav Kumar, Executive Engineer at Jankipuram; Kamalendra Kumar Singh, Food Safety and Standards Officer in Indira Nagar; Anil Kumar, Assistant Engineer; and Pramod Pandey, Junior Engineer. The government is investigating what went wrong. Officials are looking at possible failures and who should be held responsible for the incident.
The government has made clear that these officials are being held responsible for lapses. They allowed the coaching center to operate without proper safety measures. The investigation is focused on understanding what went wrong. The another question is why these officials failed in their duties.
The fire broke out at an animation coaching center in Lucknow that was operating during summer vacations. The center was teaching animation and cartoon-making to children aged 15, 16, and 17. On the day of the incident, the building caught fire suddenly. The center was packed with wooden furniture and materials used for training.
When the fire started, the children tried to run towards the back of the building to escape. But the wooden furniture burned rapidly and filled the building with thick, toxic smoke. The smoke was so dense that the children could not see or breathe. Many collapsed due to smoke inhalation. Fifteen children have been confirmed dead so far. Fourteen bodies have been visually identified. Several other children suffered burns and injuries and were sent to KGMC Trauma Center for treatment.
These officials are responsible for inspecting and monitoring buildings and facilities in Lucknow. Their job is to ensure that buildings meet safety standards. They are supposed to check that fire safety equipment is in place, along with verification that emergency exits are clear and accessible. Gaurav Kumar is an Executive Engineer responsible for construction and building standards in his area. He should have ensured the building was safe for use. Kamalendra Kumar Singh is a Food Safety and Standards Officer. His role includes inspecting facilities. He should have flagged safety concerns at the center. Anil Kumar and Pramod Pandey, as Assistant Engineer and Junior Engineer, were responsible for ground-level inspections and monitoring. They should have reported any safety violations they found.
The suspensions suggest that these officials either did not conduct proper inspections or ignored safety violations at the coaching center. They did not ensure that the building had proper fire safety measures. They did not check that emergency exits were adequate. They did not verify that the center met building codes.
The government had ordered a high-level inquiry into the entire incident. Officials have been directed to find out exactly what lapses existed at the center. The investigation will examine whether the building had fire extinguishers. It will check if emergency exits were blocked or inadequate. It will look at whether the center had proper ventilation. The probe will also determine whether these suspended officials visited the center before the fire.
