Mathura: To address the growing traffic congestion between Mathura and Vrindavan, plans are underway to develop a four-lane road over the old railway track. The approximately 12-kilometre-long route will be developed as a road corridor, with the responsibility assigned to the Mathura-Vrindavan Development Authority (MVDA). In the first phase, an approximately four-kilometre-long elevated road will be constructed from Machhli Phatak in Mathura to Masani. Notably, the Detailed Project Report (DPR) is being prepared keeping in mind the possibility of future metro operations along this route.
Under the initiative of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath to improve religious tourism in the Braj region, the state government has approved the plan to convert the old railway track between Mathura and Vrindavan into a road. Following the approval, MVDA has initiated the process of preparing the Detailed Project Report (DPR). A meeting was held on Friday at the auditorium of the Geeta Research Institute and Rasleela Academy in Vrindavan, chaired by Uttar Pradesh Braj Teerth Vikas Parishad Vice Chairman Shailjakant Mishra. Divisional Commissioner Nagendra Pratap, District Magistrate Chandra Prakash Singh, MVDA Vice Chairman Lakshmi Nagappan, Municipal Commissioner Ojasvi Raj and other officials discussed various aspects of the project.
According to the DPR proposal presented during the meeting, the approximately 12-kilometre-long old railway track will be developed into a four-lane road. The route will not merely serve as an alternative transportation option but will be developed as a modern traffic corridor designed to benefit devotees and local residents. Facilities such as parking areas, commercial activities and other public amenities are also proposed. In the first phase, an approximately four-kilometre-long elevated road will be constructed from Machhli Phatak to Masani. The remaining stretch will be developed in the second phase.
A key feature of the project is that future transportation requirements are also being considered. The DPR is being prepared keeping in mind the possibility of metro operations between Mathura and Vrindavan in the future. The road corridor is expected to provide better connectivity to Shri Krishna Janmasthan in Mathura, Banke Bihari Temple in Vrindavan and the National Highway near Masani. The project is expected to facilitate smoother travel between the two religious towns while reducing traffic pressure on major roads within the cities.
MVDA Vice Chairman Lakshmi Nagappan stated that the development of a road over the old railway track would provide an additional transportation option between Mathura and Vrindavan. The project will benefit local residents as well as devotees visiting temples and exploring the Braj region. It is expected to reduce traffic congestion within the cities and improve the movement of vehicles. She further stated that the DPR is proposed to be submitted to the state government this month.
