After Sword Clash, Nihang Group Accused of Attempting Takeover of Two Gurdwaras in Uttarakhand (X)
Dehradun/Rudraprayag: The dispute that arose between Nihang Sikhs and the local administration in Rudraprayag and Karnaprayag areas of Uttarakhand has now become a law and order challenge. The situation became more tense after the sword fighting incident in Karnaprayag, when some Nihangs allegedly tried to take over the Gurudwaras at Nagarasu and Rudraprayag in Rudraprayag district. In view of the situation, the administration has imposed Section 163 of the Indian Civil Security Code (BNSS) in Karnaprayag area till June 27. Internet services were also temporarily suspended in several sensitive areas and additional security forces were deployed.
According to the information, there was a dispute between Nihang pilgrims and local people in Karnaprayag on June 16, which later turned into a violent clash. Police had arrested four Nihangs in this case. After the arrest, some Nihang groups alleged that the action was taken unilaterally and adequate steps were not taken against the local people. Amidst this resentment the protests intensified.
According to the administration and Gurudwara management, some Nihangs forcibly entered the Nagarasu Gurudwara and created a ruckus. The Gurudwara manager alleged that there was abuse, vandalism and attempts to occupy. Some Nihangs climbed onto the upper floor and roof of the gurudwara. They were demanding the release of their arrested comrades. During this time, there were allegations that one or two people were held hostage for some time. There was a situation of tension in the Gurudwara of Rudraprayag also.
Rudraprayag police chose the path of talks while avoiding the use of force. Many senior officers including SP Niharika Tomar reached the spot and talked to the Nihangs. Security agencies feared that if the situation worsened, the Chardham Yatra could be affected. Therefore the area was cordoned off. Additional police, PAC and ITBP personnel were deployed. Strict monitoring is being maintained at sensitive points.
Rumors and videos were spreading rapidly on social media. There was a fear of protest and incitement due to this. As a precautionary measure, internet services were temporarily suspended in Karnaprayag, Gauchar, Simli and surrounding areas. Also, gathering of five or more people, processions, dharnas and demonstrations were banned. Section 163 of BNS has been imposed till June 27 to maintain law and order.
The Uttarakhand government has ordered an impartial investigation into the entire matter. Home Secretary Shailesh Bagoli said that strict action will be taken against those who give it a communal colour. A detailed investigation has been handed over to the IG of Garhwal Range. The government said that further decisions will be taken only after listening to all the parties. The culprits have been assured of action as per law.
After the controversy escalated, Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann spoke to Uttarakhand CM Pushkar Singh Dhami on phone. Both stressed finding a peaceful solution and removing misunderstandings. Dhami assured that the investigation would be completely fair. Whoever is found guilty, action will be taken against him as per law. The governments of both states are together trying to normalize the situation.
