Google is following Apple's lead by initiating Pixel smartphone production in India, with plans to export these devices to Europe and the US. The tech giant is gearing up for commercial production in partnership with Foxconn and Dixon Technologies' subsidiary, Padget Electronics, in Tamil Nadu. While Google India did not immediately comment on the matter, sources indicate that trial production has already commenced.
The formal announcement of this development is expected in the second half of the year. Dixon Technologies will handle the base variants of the Pixel phones, while Foxconn will manufacture the Pro variants. Commercial production is slated to start in September, with exports likely to begin once production stabilises, leveraging India's production-linked incentive (PLI) program to boost local manufacturing.
Meanwhile, Apple has been leading the charge in Indian iPhone exports, with exports exceeding Rs 16,500 crore in the first two months of the current financial year. This represents over 80 percent of the country's total iPhone production and assembly, with Foxconn accounting for approximately 65 percent of total exports. In FY 24, Apple's overall iPhone production in India reached around USD 14 billion.
The Indian government has highlighted significant growth in mobile phone production, from Rs 18,900 crore in 2014-15 to an estimated Rs 4.10 lakh crore in FY24, reflecting a staggering 2,000 percent increase, largely driven by initiatives like the PLI scheme. Prime Minister Narendra Modi noted that one in seven iPhones worldwide is now manufactured in India, as per data from the India Cellular and Electronics Association (ICEA).
In related news, Apple is gearing up to unveil its iPhone 16 series in September, expected to introduce several enhancements compared to its predecessors. Speculation suggests that the top-end iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max models will feature a new A-series processor, enhancing performance and functionality.
