In fresh round of threat notifications to some of its users in India, along with 91 other countries, Apple has warned that their iPhone could have been attacked by ‘mercenary spyware,’ including the Israeli NSO Group’s controversial Pegasus malware. However, the Cupertino-based tech giant, however, has not attributed to the recent wave of attacks to any stakeholder.

According to the sources, the threat notification emails were sent across at around 12.30 am IST on Thursday (April 11) to affected users in India. however, it is still unclear that how many emails have been sent.

A similar notification was sent to Opposition leaders across parties last year, from Congress’s Shashi Tharoor to AAP’s Raghav Chadha to TMC’s Mahua Moitra who got warning of a ‘potential state-sponsored spyware attack’ on the iPhones. However, after pressure from the government, the company clarified that “it does not attribute the threat notifications to any specific state-sponsored attacker.”

The company in the notification has advised the users to be cautious while opening any link they receive, and not to open any links or attachments from unexpected or unknown senders.

Noteworthy is that Apple started sending these notifications back in 2021 and since then almost 150 countries have started receiving them. at least 20 iPhone users in India received the notification.
