New Delhi: OpenAI made its 'Go' plan for ChatGPT free for one full year for users in India. Originally launched in August this year at Rs 399 per month, the ChatGPT Go tier is OpenAI’s most affordable paid plan in India. The one-year free access is a time-limited promotion tied to OpenAI’s first DevDay Exchange event in Bengaluru, signaling how crucial India has become for the company’s global strategy.
For users who sign up during the promotional window, the Go plan offers upgraded access to OpenAI’s flagship model (GPT-5) and a bundle of enhanced features: higher message limits, more image generation, expanded file uploads, and longer memory while conversing. For instance, OpenAI had said that compared with the free tier, Go users will enjoy '10× higher message limits, 10× more image generations, 10× more file uploads, and 2× longer memory' in India. These upgrades appeal not just to casual users but to creators, students, professionals, and small teams looking for more robust AI assistance.
India ranks as OpenAI’s second-largest market and offers some of the fastest-growing adoption rates for AI tools. With paid subscriptions in the country having doubled shortly after the Go plan’s launch, OpenAI is doubling down to cement its leadership position before competitors make deeper inroads.
The offer also comes amid a broader trend: rival services, including Google LLC and Perplexity AI, are launching similar free or discounted AI-premium plans in India.
Eligible users need to sign up on or after 4 November within the limited-time window. Existing subscribers of ChatGPT Go are also eligible — their next billing date will simply be postponed by 12 months. The payment method (credit card or UPI) must be added during checkout, but no subscription fee will be charged during the 12-month free period. Once the year ends, billing will resume automatically unless the user cancells.
For many Indian users, this is a rare opportunity to access a higher-tier AI subscription without cost, potentially accelerating experimentation and adoption of advanced AI tools like GPT-5. On the business side, OpenAI is investing in deepening its India footprint — including local teams, education-focused initiatives, and enhanced support for Indic languages.
Ultimately, the move could shape how affordable AI services are priced, delivered and consumed in one of the world’s largest digital markets.
