In a recent development, OpenAI has rolled out a new Memory feature for ChatGPT users, enhancing the capabilities of this popular AI platform. This feature, initially tested in February, is now accessible to ChatGPT Plus users globally, except for those in Europe or Korea.

The Memory feature is designed to augment user interactions with ChatGPT. It allows users to instruct ChatGPT to remember specific details or automatically capture relevant information from conversations. OpenAI claims that this feature streamlines communication by eliminating the need to repeat information and enhancing the helpfulness of future conversations.

User control and functionality

Users retain complete control over ChatGPT's memory functions. They can prompt ChatGPT to remember certain information, inquire about stored memories, and command it to forget details either in conversation or through settings. Additionally, users have the flexibility to disable the Memory feature entirely if desired.

How it will use memory?

For instance, users can inform ChatGPT about their preferences, such as formatting meeting notes with headlines, bullet points, and action items summarized. ChatGPT remembers these preferences, ensuring consistent output. Another example illustrates how ChatGPT can recall personal details; if a user mentions their toddler's love for jellyfish, ChatGPT can suggest jellyfish-themed ideas when creating a birthday card.

OpenAI has simplified memory management with easy access to all stored information. Users can hover over the "Memory updated" notification and select "Manage memories" to review captured details and delete any unwanted memories. Memories remain accessible through settings for users to review or modify as needed.

Turning off memory

Users have the option to disable the Memory feature at any time through the settings menu. When memory is off, ChatGPT will not create or utilize memories, offering flexibility based on user preferences.

It's important to note that the Memory feature is exclusive to ChatGPT Plus users presently. OpenAI has not disclosed plans regarding potential expansion to free users, leaving room for future updates and enhancements in ChatGPT's functionality.
