New Delhi: Has your mobile phone been stolen? Do these 6 things immediately after your mobile is stolen, otherwise your bank account could be emptied through Aadhaar and UPI. If your phone is lost or stolen, learn what to do immediately to keep your UPI, Aadhaar, PAN, and bank data safe and avoid the risk of fraud.
Taking action within the first 24 to 48 hours of losing or stealing your phone can prevent major losses. The most important thing is to secure your bank apps, UPI, Aadhaar-linked services, and PAN/email logins. Doing these 6 things immediately after losing your phone will save you from major trouble:
If your phone is an Android, immediately log out or lock your Google account. For Apple phones (iPhones), lock or wipe the device with Find My iPhone. This step will ensure that no one can access your Gmail, photos, or other services.
Log into the UPI app from another device (such as a tablet or computer). Immediately unlink the UPI/Wallet device linking. If possible, change the UPI PIN.
Every mobile phone has a unique IMEI number. Blocking it immediately can block your phone from the network. Call your service provider (Jio, Airtel, Vi, etc.) and have the IMEI blocked. The IMEI number will be listed on your phone's box or bill.
It's very important to deactivate your SIM card as soon as you lose your phone, as fraud can occur through OTPs, calls, and messages. Contact your service provider immediately for SIM deactivation. This will also keep UPI/Bank OTPs secure.
If your Aadhaar is linked to a phone number or email, log in to the Aadhaar portal at https://uidai.gov.in and unlink the device. Also, ensure that copies of any documents linked to your Aadhaar are not saved or shared anywhere.
If your phone is lost or stolen, it's crucial to inform your primary bank first. Nowadays, mobile banking, UPI, and SMS alerts are all connected to your phone. If your phone falls into the wrong hands, anyone could attempt to access your bank account.
