New Delhi: With every passing year young people come up with new trend for weight loss. This year too, youngsters from China are sharing a new diet trick called the "plastic eating" trend for weight loss. Is this trick really useful or just another stunt to gain views on social media.
In the viral videos, that is widely circulating on social media platform, TikTok, people, especially youngsters place a sheet of clear plastic wrap over their mouths before eating. They then put small pieces of food over the plastic, chew briefly and spit it out without actually swallowing the food.
According to the youngsters, who are following this diet, claim that the “plastic eating” trend reduce cravings by pretending to eat. Supporters of the practice claim that by doing this trend it tricks the brain into feeling full without consuming calories. It appears this is done to prevent weight gain and reduce the chances of obesity.
According to health experts, there is no proof of effectiveness of the trend but the trick may result in serious health problems, overeating and eating disorders.
The experts say that chewing food over plastic and spitting it out still carries real risks. The tiny plastic particles, known as microplastics, can enter the body. These particles may irritate the stomach and intestines. And people can experience bloating, discomfort, or nausea.
Experts also flag mental health concerns. Repeatedly chewing food and discarding it can foster an unhealthy relationship with eating and may resemble harmful disordered eating behaviours seen in clinical settings.
Reactions on social media are mixed. Some users are mocking the trend as extreme or absurd. Others express concern that it could influence vulnerable teens and young adults struggling with body image. Many commenters urge people not to share the videos, saying they could encourage risky behaviour.
