An IIT BHU graduate’s excitement after getting his first job has made social media users laugh out loud. Shivanshu Ranjan, who recently secured a pre-placement offer for an SDE-1 (Software Development Engineer) role at Amazon, shared a screenshot of his Whatsapp conversation with his father on X (Formerly Twitter).
Ranjan texted his father saying, “Job lag gaya, Amazon me” (I got a job at Amazon). Like any young graduate, he expected his father to respond with happiness or excitement. Instead, his father simply replied with one short word: “ok.” This brief reply became the highlight of Ranjan’s post on X (formerly Twitter). He captioned it, “Typical dad response after I got job,” showing how Indian parents often express emotions in the simplest ways possible.

Ranjan later told HT.com that this was his first job offer. He clarified that it was a pre-placement offer for an SDE-1 position and added that he completed his chemical engineering degree from IIT BHU. The post quickly became popular online. Many users said that the father’s short reply reflected the classic Indian parent style — calm, simple, and sometimes unintentionally funny. Some said it showed how parents in India often express pride in quiet ways rather than with big reactions.
Soon after Ranjan’s post went viral, people began sharing their own stories and reactions. One user commented, “My father would leave me on seen.” Another wrote, “Your father has seen it all; maybe that’s why he didn’t react much. You’ll do the same after some years.” Someone else jokingly said, “Just Indian parents. The same kind of response you’d get from a jealous friend.” Others noted that the single “ok” carried more emotion than it seemed. As one user put it, “That OK has a way bigger emotion which WhatsApp has no capability to explain.”
Many X users appreciated the father’s honest and straightforward reaction. While it may appear plain, many agreed it showed quiet pride and trust in his son’s achievement. The viral exchange struck a chord with thousands of people online who saw their own parents’ behavior reflected in the message. What began as a simple text between a son and his father turned into a heartwarming and funny reminder of how Indian families express love — not always through big words, but often through small, meaningful gestures.
