Assam Election Results 2026: Is BJP’s Immigration Pitch Still Its Strongest Poll Strategy? (X)

New Delhi: The Assam 2026 Assembly Election's result will be declared on Monday, and with that it will also be clear whether the BJP-led NDA will secure a third consecutive term in the state. But one key question dominates the political narrative, does the BJP still rely on the immigration issue as its biggest weapon in election.

When did the election happen?

The voting for the 126-member Assam Assembly took place on April 9 and results will be declared on Monday.

With the result on Monday, the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) is aiming for a third consecutive term in the state, riding on a mix of governance claims and long-standing political messaging.

What is the main issue of BJP?

For the past so many years, the illegal immigration issue has remained as the center of the Assam politics. The BJP has aggressively campaigned on the promise of  protecting the state's cultural identity and demographic balance. This narrative has helped the party consolidate support across large sections of voters.

What happen in 2026 election?

In the 2026 elections, the immigration theme featured prominently during campaigning. The party leaders highlighted concerns over infiltration and promised stricter measures, positioning themselves as protectors of indigenous communities.

However, the big question this time is whether that message still resonates as strongly as before.

The charge was led by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa, who tried to balance both, combining identity politics with a focus on infrastructure and welfare delivery.

What about the opposition?

The opposition, led by the Congress and regional players, has attempted to shift the narrative towards local issues and governance gaps. They argue that repeated emphasis on immigration is an attempt to divert attention from everyday concerns.

Despite this, early exit polls suggest the BJP may still hold an advantage, indicating that its messaging, including the immigration plank, continues to find traction among voters.

Assam’s politics has long been shaped by identity and migration debates, rooted in decades-old anxieties about cultural preservation. Even as new issues emerge, these concerns remain deeply embedded in voter sentiment.
