This story of woman from the Ausgram Assembly seat in West Bengal may seem like a film story, but it is the reality of the democracy. Kalita Maji, a 37 year-old domestic help, who earns just Rs 2,500 per month, has overcome political heavyweights and a lack of resources to reach the Assembly. 

Who is Kalita Maji?

Kalita Maji is the newly elected BJP MLA and she has won the Ausgram Assembly seat. Before entering politics, Kalita worked as a domestic help for the past two decades in Patra Para. She cleaned, washed utensils, cooked food and caregiving duties in multiple homes, earning around Rs 2,500 per month. She supported her family with this income.

The BJP nominated Kalita as its candidate, and the local people reposed their faith in her, electing her as MLA. This highlights the reality of democracy, where even the most simple citizen can rise and script a truly inspiring journey. 

Did Kalita win election?

Kalita Maji won the Ausgram Assembly seat by a huge margin of 12,535 votes. Maji defeated Shyama Prasanna Lohar of the Trinamool Congress. Maji secured a total of 1,07,692 votes and she used to campaign door-to-door. Her hard work finally paid off, and the public gave her a landslide victory.

Kalita's political journey began in 2021 when the BJP fielded her for the first time. She lost the election by nearly 11,000 votes, but she remained resolute and continued to work with the people of her constituency.
