Bhai Dooj muhurat today: The festival of Bhai Dooj is being celebrated across India today. This special occasion marks the last day of the five-day Diwali celebrations. Every year, Bhai Dooj falls on the Dwitiya Tithi of Shukla Paksha in the Kartik month. The day is also known as Yama Dwitiya, as it is linked to Lord Yamraj, the God of Death. On this day, sisters apply tilak on their brothers’ foreheads, pray for their long and healthy lives, and offer them food with love. According to belief, a brother who visits his sister’s home, receives the tilak, and eats food prepared by her is blessed with good health and protection from untimely death. The day also includes the worship of Chitragupta, the divine record keeper of Yamraj. Let’s find out the most auspicious time for tilak today.
There are four main shubh muhurats (auspicious timings) for performing the tilak today:
Abhijit Muhurat – Begins at 11:43 AM and ends at 12:28 PM. Any auspicious task can be performed during this period.
Second Muhurat – From 1:13 PM to 3:28 PM.
Vijay Muhurat – From 1:58 PM to 2:43 PM.
Godhuli Muhurat – From 5:43 PM to 6:09 PM, which is the evening twilight time and considered very sacred.
As per the Hindu Panchang, Bhai Dooj is celebrated on the Dwitiya Tithi of Kartik Shukla Paksha. This year, the tithi began at 8:16 PM on October 22 and will end at 10:46 PM on October 23. Hence, all the rituals and puja can be performed during the day on October 23, 2025.
On this day, sisters prepare a special puja plate (thali) that includes roli, rice grains (akshat), coconut, and sweets. The ritual starts with offering prayers to Lord Ganesha. A sacred design (chowk) is made in the northeast corner of the house. The brother is then seated on a clean wooden stool, and the sister applies tilak on his forehead. She offers flowers, betel leaves, and areca nuts, and performs his aarti. After that, the sister feeds her brother sweets and a home-cooked meal, which is considered very auspicious.
According to ancient tales, on the day of Bhai Dooj, Lord Krishna returned to Dwarka after killing the demon Narakasura. His sister Subhadra welcomed him warmly with fruits, sweets, and lamps, and applied a tilak on his forehead, praying for his long and healthy life. Since then, this day has been celebrated as Bhai Dooj to honor the love between brothers and sisters.
It is considered auspicious to gift your sister clothes or jewelry on this day.
You can also give her cosmetics, perfumes, silver coins, or money.
Avoid gifting anything black in color, as it is considered inauspicious.
You may also present sweets or chocolates as a thoughtful and loving gift.
