Astrlogy News:Chaturmas is a sacred period when Lord Vishnu enters his yogic sleep in the Ksheer Sagar, marking a time for cosmic balance. This four-month duration, from Ashadha Shukla Ekadashi to Kartika Shukla Ekadashi, is a time for spiritual reflection and discipline. During this period, auspicious activities like weddings and new ventures are avoided. Instead, devotees focus on fasting, prayers, rituals, and spiritual practices. It’s considered an ideal time for self-purification, devotion, and inner growth through disciplined practices.
Chaturmas is a term derived from two Sanskrit words, "Chatur" (four) and "Mas" (months), meaning "four months". It starts on the Shukla Ekadashi of Ashadha and ends on the Shukla Ekadashi of Kartika. During this time, Lord Vishnu rests in the Ksheer Sagar (the ocean of milk) in a state of yogic sleep. It is considered a time for self-discipline, spiritual growth, and devotion.
According to ancient texts, Lord Vishnu enters yogic sleep for four months to recharge his divine energy, which is necessary for the cosmic creation, preservation, and destruction cycles. During this period, the gods and goddesses also take rest, and it is considered a time of cosmic balance. This phase is essential for the regeneration of the universe, as per Hindu mythology.
It is said that on the Devshayani Ekadashi, Lord Vishnu reclines on the Sheshnag (the serpent king) in the Ksheer Sagar. He remains in this state until the Prabodhini Ekadashi, marking his awakening. The period of his rest is called the "Devshayan Kal", and it is a time when no new auspicious activities are initiated.
As Lord Vishnu is in yogic sleep, it is believed that new ventures, marriages, and other auspicious events cannot yield their full potential without the divine presence of the gods. Therefore, the period of Chaturmas is not suitable for weddings, housewarmings, or starting new business ventures. This period is seen as a time for self-reflection, spiritual practice, and inner growth.
This time is considered ideal for spiritual activities such as prayer, meditation, and fasting. Devotees focus on self-purification through religious rituals and austerities. Chanting mantras, reading sacred texts, and engaging in penance are common practices. It is also a time to develop virtues like patience, discipline, and humility.
Several important festivals occur during the Chaturmas period, including Raksha Bandhan, Krishna Janmashtami, Ganesh Chaturthi, Navratri, Dussehra, Karva Chauth, Diwali, and Tulsi Vivah. These festivals have deep spiritual significance and are celebrated with much devotion and ritual. This period is a time for believers to strengthen their devotion to God and take part in rituals that purify the soul.
In 2025, Chaturmas will begin on July 8th (Devshayani Ekadashi) and conclude on November 2nd (Prabodhini Ekadashi). During this period, it is recommended to avoid consuming non-vegetarian food, alcohol, onions, garlic, and excessive travelling. The focus should be on leading a simple, disciplined life filled with spiritual practices like prayer, fasting, and self-reflection.
