Actually Maharishi Valmiki was born under the name Ratnakar. He was born into a Brahmin family, but in young age he adopted the life of a robber. It was his daily work to rob people and snatch their property on the way.

One day he met Narada Muni. Narada Muni questioned Ratnakar about the result of his actions. Ratnakar argued with Narada Muni thinking that he does this for his family. But when he asked his family if they would participate in his deeds, the wife and father clearly refused. This incident proved to be a big turn for Ratnakar. Narada Muni guided him about the importance of Rama and spiritual life. This guidance completely changed Ratnakar's life. He started doing harsh penance, and eventually Brahma Ji ordered him to write a book on the life of Lord Rama. During this time he composed the Ramayana.

Maharishi Valmiki gave refuge to Mata Sita in the ashram at the time of exile, and he educated his sons Luv and Kush, taught them the art of warfare, and became their guide.
