Sawan Shivratri 2026: Know How To Perform Shiv Puja At Home, Rituals and Puja Vidhi (X)

New Delhi: Sawan Shivratri is a day which is highly important and auspicious for Lord Shiva's worship. Right from morning till the whole day, one can hear 'Har Har Mahadev' being chanted in temples. In addition to that, people offer water to the Shivalinga and seek blessings for fulfilling all their wishes. However, there are many people who are confused about performing the Sawan Shivratri puja at home.

How to worship Lord Shiva at home?

A lengthy ritual is not required during the puja. The ritual of Jalabhishek with devotion and proper rituals is also believed to be important. After taking a bath in the morning on Sawan Shivratri, take a vow and fast and meditate. Then install a Shivalinga and offer Panchamrit.

What is needed for Sawan Shivratri puja?

In order to perform puja at home, you will have to collect the required items. Panchamrit may be made with the help of water, ganga water, milk, curd, ghee, honey and sugar. Also offer Bel leaves, Datura, cannabis flowers and Aak flowers, sandalwood, unbroken grains of rice, incense and lamps. By preparing the puja materials beforehand, one doesn't have to get up so often during the Abhisheka and the puja is finished with a calm and contented mind.

How to perform puja at home?

On the day of Sawan Shivratri, get up early in the morning, take bath and wear clean clothes. Clean the place of worship and vow to resolve the fast as per one's faith. Then, place the Shivalinga in a clean place and start the Puja.

First perform Jalabhishek: First pour plain water and then Ganga water to the Shivalinga at the beginning of puja. Then, the anointment can be done using the holy water, or Panchamrit. Offer panchamrit (made of milk, yoghurt, ghee, honey and sugar) to the Shivalinga and then offer clean water once again.

Provide Belpatra and flowers: Once the Abhishekam is completed, apply a tilak on the Shivalinga using sandalwood and Akshat (rice grains) are offered to the Lord. Then present Belpatra (wood apple), Dhatura (durma) and Aak (aak) flower. Belpatra (wood apple) is also very important in the worship of Lord Shiva. While offering Belpatra, devotees can meditate on Lord Shiva and chant mantras.

Chant the mantra 108 times: Om Namah Shivaya is an easy way to chant while praying. People who have faith can chant 108 times. The Mahamrityunjaya mantra is also chanted. Then light the lamp and incense and then say an aarti of Lord Shiva and pray for good health and peace to the family.

What to keep in mind while worshipping?

During Sawan Shivratri puja, devotion is given priority over ostentation. So, when performing puja at home, maintain your mind at rest and collect the ingredients that you can. After the puja, consume the prasad.
