Auto News: The highest amount ever paid in India for a vehicle number plate was recorded in Haryana when a man successfully bid Rs 1.17 crore for the registration number HR88B8888. A total of 45 people competed in the auction, which began with a base price of only Rs 50,000. The bidding escalated rapidly, and this number eventually became the costliest in Indian history. Before this, HR22W2222 held the record with a bid amount close to Rs 38 lakh. This recent auction has shocked many people, as the number plate alone costs more than several luxury car models.
The second highest amount paid for a number plate was by a tech billionaire from Kerala. He purchased the number KL 07 DG 0007 by paying Rs 45.99 lakh. This number is believed to be based on fortune preferences and digital symbolism. The car on which the plate was used was expensive, but the number price itself drew significant attention. Kerala has shown steady interest in unique number codes, especially those ending with 0001 and 0007.
A car owner from Chandigarh secured the third costliest registration plate in India. He spent Rs 34 lakh to attach the number CH01DA0001 to his Toyota vehicle. This is considered a premium sequence and often linked with government-style numbering formats. Chandigarh remains one of India’s top regions where people buy exclusive numbers for image and visibility.
In Gujarat, a man displayed his admiration for James Bond by purchasing number plate 007. He paid Rs 34 lakh for this VVIP number and installed it on his Toyota Fortuner. The number is associated with the famous spy code from movies. This purchase reflects how international pop culture influences number plate trends in India.
A businessman from Kerala bought the number KL 01 CK 0001 for Rs 31 lakh. He installed it on his Porsche 718 Boxster sports car. Fans noted that the cost of the number itself almost touched the value of several high-end vehicles. Numbers containing multiple zeros and single digits are seen as symbols of power in South India.
In Telangana, a businessman spent Rs 25.5 lakh for the number TG 09 9999 on his Toyota Land Cruiser LC300. In another case from Kerala, the number KL 07 DG 0001 was sold for Rs 25.52 lakh. Tamil Nadu also saw bidding for TN 09 9999 reaching Rs 25 lakh. In Kerala again, number KL 01 CB 0001 was bought for Rs 18 lakh. Chandigarh recorded another premium bid of Rs 17 lakh for the plate CH 01 AN 0001.
Experts say fancy number plates are now seen as status symbols. Some buyers believe certain numbers bring financial luck or reflect power, while others simply want uniqueness. Social media visibility, business branding and public identity are also major reasons behind buying expensive vehicle registrations. While these numbers may exceed the cost of the cars themselves, the owners believe the value lies in identity and exclusivity. Globally, even more expensive plates have been sold, but in India this is the first time a number has crossed Rs 1 crore.
