Patna: In a major crackdown on the notorious tender scam in Bihar, the Special Vigilance Unit (SVU) on Wednesday has arrested three officials for their alleged involvement in a tender scam linked to some senior IAS officers. These include two currently suspended officers and one retired officer.

Who are arrested?

The SVU arrested three accused on Wednesday, including former joint secretary-level officer Mumukshu Choudhary from the Finance Department, former chief engineer Tarini Das from the Building Construction Department, and executive engineer Umesh Kumar Singh from the Urban Development and Housing Department after questioning them in connection with the case.

What are the allegations?

Mumukshu Choudhary is accused of providing unfair benefits to  Rishu Shree Group's companies during his tenure in municipal bodies and committing irregularities in tenders. Tarini Das is accused of abusing her influence in government construction works and tenders to benefit companies, while Umesh Kumar Singh is accused of accepting bribes from contractors associated with Rishu Shree and committing irregularities in bill payments.

What about ED investigation?

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) is already investigating this matter. The ED conducted raids at the residences of these officials, seizing large sums of cash and documents. Based on the ED report and the findings of the raid, the SVU registered an FIR and intensified the investigation.

Is Rishu Shree arrested?

The main accused in this scam, contractor Rishu Shri, was arrested by the SVU a few days ago in Patna. It is alleged that Rishu Shri "managed" several senior officials and secured tenders from various departments for his companies and favored contractors. This SVU action is now likely to bring several other current officials under investigation.
