Budget 2026: Senior Citizens May Get Big Relief; Railway Ticket Discount Likely To Return (OpenAi)
New Delhi: The eyes of crores of railway passengers of the country, especially senior citizens, are currently fixed on the Union Budget 2026. Before the budget, important information related to railways is coming out, which has increased the expectations of elderly passengers. According to sources and media reports, Indian Railways is seriously considering restarting the senior citizen ticket concession given before the Corona period.
If Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman approves this proposal in the budget, train travel could become affordable again for millions of elderly people. This decision will not only provide financial relief but will also make the travel of the elderly easier.
This issue has been discussed at several levels between the Railway Ministry and the Finance Ministry. There are indications that a positive decision regarding this may be taken in the budget. The final decision will be revealed only during the budget speech.
Before March 2020, Railways used to give direct fare concessions to senior citizens. Female passengers were given concessions up to 50 percent, and male passengers were given up to 40 percent. This facility was applicable in all categories.
This discount may be applicable if the age of male passengers is 60 years or more and if the age of female passengers is 58 years or more. The rules are likely to return to the old structure.
Earlier this discount was given to Sleeper, Third AC, Second AC, and First AC. Sources say that if the scheme is reinstated, all classes can remain included in it.
If a female senior citizen books a ticket worth Rs 3000 in First AC, she will have to pay only Rs 1500. Male passengers can get a discount of around Rs 1200 on this ticket.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, the government temporarily closed this facility to prevent unnecessary travel. At that time the financial pressure on the Railways had also increased considerably.
After Corona, it took time for the Railways to recover from the losses. For this reason, this facility was not restored in the last few years, even though the demand for it remained constant.
Railways' income has improved over the years. Passenger numbers have increased, and revenue from freight traffic has also strengthened. For this reason the exemption is being reconsidered.
If the old rule is implemented, passengers will not need to make any separate card or document. As soon as the age is entered, the ticket will automatically be issued at the concessional rate.
Expenses on long-distance travels, pilgrimages, and meeting family will be reduced. Elderly people living on fixed incomes will get direct relief from this.
