Central Government Plans Subsidy For Ethanol Cooking Stoves To Reduce LPG Dependence

New Delhi: The central government is preparing to take a big step towards reducing the increasing dependence on LPG in the country and promoting clean fuel. The government may soon launch a subsidy scheme to encourage ethanol-based cooking systems. Under this scheme, ethanol-powered stoves and their use will be promoted. The government believes that this will reduce dependence on LPG imports and strengthen energy security and farmers will also benefit from the increasing demand for ethanol.

Why is the government emphasising ethanol cooking?

India imports LPG in large quantities to meet its domestic needs. Fluctuations in prices and supply disruptions in the international market have a direct impact on the consumers of the country. In such a situation, the government wants to develop ethanol as an alternative as a locally available and renewable fuel. Ethanol is already being used for blending with petrol and now work is underway on a plan to deliver it to home kitchens.

What will be the subsidy scheme?

Under the proposed scheme of the government, subsidy can be given to make the purchase of ethanol based stoves cheaper. Besides, creation of a separate network for supply and distribution of ethanol is also being considered. In the initial phase, pilot projects can be started in some areas to assess safety, supply and consumer response. At present, work is going on on the final form of the plan.

What will be the benefit to common people and farmers?

If this scheme is successful then domestic consumers will get a new fuel as an alternative to LPG. This can reduce expenditure on imported gas and promote self-reliance in the energy sector. On the other hand, farmers and the ethanol industry are also expected to benefit from the increase in demand for ethanol made from sugarcane, corn and other agricultural products. Experts believe that this can give new impetus to the biofuel sector.

What challenges will have to be faced?

However, it will not be easy to implement ethanol based cooking system on a large scale. For this, availability of safe and affordable chulhas, strong distribution network, safety standards and awareness among consumers will have to be ensured. Apart from this, regular supply of fuel in rural and urban areas will also be a big challenge. Keeping all these aspects in mind, the government is considering implementing the scheme in a phased manner.

When can the scheme start?

The government is yet to announce the official launch date of the scheme, but work on its outline has been expedited with relevant ministries and industry stakeholders. If everything goes as per plan, then in the coming time a subsidy scheme can be started to promote ethanol based cooking systems. Its objective is not only to reduce dependence on LPG but also to take a big step towards clean energy and green economy.
