Longest Serving FM Nirmala Sitharaman To Make History With Ninth Consecutive Budget In A Row (X)

New Delhi: Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will present her ninth consecutive Union Budget on February 1, which will make her the longest-serving finance minister to present budget without any interruption. 

Why is the budget special for Nirmala Sitharaman?

By presenting this budget, Union Finance Minister will become the first to hold the record of presenting the highest budget consecutively. 

With this budget, Nirmala Sitharaman will become the longest-serving finance minister to present budget without any interruption.

She has presented a total of eight budgets in a row under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The Finance Minister presented her first budget in 2019. 

With the upcoming budget, Nirmala Sitharaman will come a little closer to almost match the record of ten budgets that was presented by former Prime Minister Morarji Desai, although he presented them in different time period.

Who presented the most Budgets?

Former Prime Minister Morarji Desai presented a total of six budgets as Finance Minister during his tenure  between 1959-1964 and later presented the four budgets during his second tenure from 1967 to 1969 

Former Finance Minister P Chidambaram presented nine budgets during his tenure for eight years but in four separate stints.

Former Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee presented eight budgets during his tenure.

Any other records?

Not only the number but the Union Finance Minister is also the person who holds the record of the longest speech in the country's history.

In the year 2020, Nirmala Sitharaman gave the longest speech in the India's history, which started from 11 am and concluded at 1:40 pm. She became the first to hold the record to present a two hours and 40 minutes speech. Later, her speech was cut short with two pages remaining and presented by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla because she was not feeling well. 

But according to the word count of the speech, former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh hold the first place to present 18,650 words speech as Finance Minister in 1991.
